Paul Edward DeWitt

Paul Edward "Eddie" DeWitt, 93, of Oakland, Maryland, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at Goodwill Retirement Community in Grantsville, MD. Born on July 11, 1928, in Oakland, he was the son of the late Malcolm Paul DeWitt and the late Clara (Spoerlein) DeWitt of Oakland.

A graduate of Oakland High School, where he enjoyed participating in the glee club, musicals, and cheerleading. He worked various jobs at the post office, the local quarry and Oakland Creamery. He took a hiatus from his work at the creamery in 1950 to serve two years in the army where he advanced to the rank of sergeant, distinguishing himself in the 504th Military Police Battalion. For more than 30 years he expertly negotiated challenging mountainous roads as a route salesman for Stroehmann Bakeries. After retirement he continued to drive for sixteen years part time as a courier for First United Bank. He had a great fondness for motorcycles and antique cars and enjoyed woodworking projects, especially gifts for his family. His greatest love was always his family, as a husband, brother, uncle, dad, granddad and most recently as a great granddad. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and a former member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, both in Oakland.   

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Emelee Royce DeWitt; two sons, Michael Edward DeWitt and husband Billy King of Winston-Salem, NC and Timothy Lee DeWitt of Philippi, WV; two grandchildren, Lenneka DeWitt Hoover and husband Andrew Hoover of San Antonio TX and Martin Edward DeWitt and wife Laurel Sisler of Durham, NC; two great grandchildren Clara Mae and Harlan Edward DeWitt of Durham, NC; a brother, Frank DeWitt and wife Shirley Calhoun DeWitt of Mansfield OH. He is also survived by numerous beloved nephews, nieces and their families.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Owen DeWitt and wife Patricia Haney DeWitt and William H. DeWitt and wife Patty Henline DeWitt.

At the request of Mr. DeWitt, he was cremated. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Oakland, on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 11:00 am; the family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00 am. Masks will be required. The C & S Fredlock Funeral Home is honored to be serving the DeWitt family at this time.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the loving caregivers and staff at Goodwill Retirement Community and everyone who assisted him previously. Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church or a charity of one's choice.
