Kathleen Poyer

July 27, 1926 — January 8, 2021

Oakland

Kathleen “Kitty” H. Poyer, age 94, of Oakland, died in her sleep on Friday, January 8, 2021.  Kitty was born on July 27, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Walter, by her parents Bartholomew Harrington (Skerries, County Dublin, Ireland) and Anne Mulry Harrington (Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland), her sisters, Mary Harrington, and Josephine Harrington, a brother, Bill Harrington; and two of her children, John "Jack" and Annemarie.

Kitty is survived by four children, Bob Poyer and wife Donna of Charleston SC, Eileen Hallock of Long Island, NY, Daniel Poyer of Oakland, MD, Maureen Poyer of Long Beach, Long Island, NY and daughter-in-law Linda Poyer of Orlando, FL. She is survived by 10 grand-children, Petra, Jacky, Bryce, Meaghan, Kristi, Colleen, Kerry, Melissa, Jeffrey and Britta. She is survived by nine great grandchildren Robbie, Jacob, Eli, Courtney, Christopher, Cameron, Dylan, Abigail Rose and Carter.

Kitty believed in the threes of the Holy Trinity which are also manifested in the three phases of her life.  The first 30 years (28 years actually) in Brooklyn and Queens NY where she was born, met and married Walter and her first three children were born.  The second thirty years were spent in North Babylon, Long Island, NY, where her three youngest children were born and all six were raised.  The retirement years were enjoyed in Oakland, MD.  Kitty loved her Irish Ancestry.  While she slyly said her favorite song was Will You Take Me Home Kathleen, When Irish Eyes are Smiling truly reflected her trademark and ever-present smile. And ah - her distinctive laugh - you did not have to be talking to her to know that she was in the room; she passed her distinctive laugh on to her three sons. Of course, she had the gift of the gab.  She never met anyone she could not talk to. As her husband, Walter said thousands of times, “who could not like your mother?”  Kitty loved her Roman Catholic faith.  She loved her parishes: Holy Cross (Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY), Sts. Cyril and Methodious (Deer Park, NY) and St. Peter the Apostle (Oakland, MD). She loved her priests: Father McCrackin, Father Behan, Father Bill McGlynn, Monsignor Ted Rooney, Monsignor Martin Fields, Bishop Rick Spenser, Father Don Parsons and Father Doug Kenney. She was not above trying to meet and have her picture taken with every visiting priest or bishop who came to the outskirts of civilization.  Luckily Father Don would warn them that they had to watch out for her – “She’s Irish you know!”
