Hubert Grant Custer, 92, of Oakland died on Thursday, January 2, 2020, at Garrett Regional Medical Center. Born on June 24, 1927, in North Glade, Swanton, he was the son of the late Heyward and Effie (Friend) Custer. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during WWII and Korea, being discharged with the rank of Corporal. He was an inspection engineer for the Maryland State Highway Administration from which he retired. Mr. Custer enjoyed deer hunting, attending his grandkids and great grandkids ball games, and loved farming. He and his wife raised fresh produce and were known for their sweet corn all over the county. He was proud of and enjoyed raising simmental cattle. Always active in the community, he was chairperson of the class of 1944 reunion committee and was a founder of the Mountain Fresh Market in Oakland. He was a member of the Pleasant View Baptist Church. Mr. Custer was extremely proud of his family but most of all, was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Mae, to whom he was married for 70 years. He is survied by his wife, Mae (Steyer) Custer; his children, Robert Grant Custer and wife Patricia, Linda Custer Rush and husband Richard, and Judy Custer Falls and husband Ricky; grandchildren, Jared William Custer, Aimee Custer Burns and husband Alex, Erin Rush Marsh and husband Michael, Nicholas Deane Rush, Jenna Rush and Brian VanBogelen, Carey Nicole Rush, Emma Lynea Rush, Caitlin Falls Chillemi and husband Austin and Cori Falls Heyder and husband Brett ; great grandchildren, Axel Grant Burns, Caleb James Rush, Joseph Cole Paugh, Creed Bronson Marsh, Wyatt Deane Rush, Wheeler Jay Grant Rush, Malkolm Grey Rush, Ember Reign Rush and Liam Scott Patton; siblings, Dale Custer and wife Marie, Leo Custer and wife Janet, Roger Custer, Clarence Custer and wife JoAnne, Shirley Custer Bernard and husband Thomas and Mary Custer Bishop and husband Franklin; a sister in law, Eileen Custer; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Grant Custer; sisters, Evelyn Custer Steyer and Phyllis Custer Knepp; and a brother, Melvin Custer. Friends will be received at the Pleasant View Baptist Church, 8931 Garrett Hwy, Oakland on Monday, January 6, 2020, from 5 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the church on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 11 AM with Pastor Wally Weeks officiating. Interment will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens with military honors accorded by the US Army and the combined honor guard of the American Legion Post #71 and the Deer Park VFW Post #10077.
