Oakland

Dennis "Dennie" Carlton Shaffer, 76, of Oakland passed away June 20,2022. Born September 14, 1945, to the late Charles D. "CD" and Oakareda "Poodle" Shaffer. Dennie was a devoted husband to the late Cheryl "Sue" (Hahn) Shaffer, which they had the privilege of being married for 52 years.

Dennie leaves behind 3 daughters whom he was very proud of. Renee Klier (Steve), Wendy Scalise (Greg), and Deni Lynn Lewis (Bob).

He loved his daughters and taught them life lessons and gave words of wisdom that they will pass on to his 6 grandchildren including Presley Lauren (Stein) Cunningham (Tyler),
Coleton Denver Stein (Sara), Trenton Carlton Lewis, and Landon Robert Lewis. A great-granddaughter Elaine Morgan Cunningham, and a step grandson, Grant Michael Scalise.

Preceded in death by his sister Betty Lou (Shaffer) Cogan, he is survived by a brother Rocky Shaffer (Pam) and several nieces and nephews.

Known as Dennie, Dad, Grandpa, or Pap-Paw, he was also know as SP4 Dennis C. Shaffer. He served his country quietly and honorably during the Vietnam War. A recipient of the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, he was shot by enemy fire in the Viet Cong jungle on Dec. 21, 1966. He survived a bullet to the head which he carried with him to death. He was considered a miracle survivor in the Vietnam War, the first soldier to live through his injuries at that time, as quoted in the Baltimore Sun newspaper in 1967. During his lengthy stay at Walter Reed Hospital, he was greeted by Reverend Billy Graham, Bob Hope, and Betty White.

Although considered 100% disabled, Dennie worked for the Garrett County Roads Department, Herrington Manor and Swallow Falls State Park, and was a precise taxidermist. He also was a full time farmer. He was a member of the United Brethren Church in Crellin Md.

Dennie thoroughly enjoyed farming and was an avid hunter. His girls and grandchildren were always helping on the farm. He also had great enjoyment taking his grandchildren hunting. He was very proud of each and every one of them. Nothing made him happier than when his girls and grandchildren were all home. Dennie's hobbies consisted of taking walks around his farm, welding, and catching an Atlanta Braves baseball game or a Pittsburgh Steelers football game.
