Wayne Johnson

Wayne Richard Johnson, 90, of Oakland died on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Dennett Road Manor. Born on January 1, 1932, in Oakland, he was the son of the late William Amos and Emma Faye (Rice) Johnson.

Wayne was a graduate of Oakland High School and was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He was a graduate of Frostburg State University and West Virginia University. A dedicated educator, Wayne was a teacher at Southern High School, a Maryland Certification Specialist, Principal of Center Street, Oak Street and Broad Ford Elementary Schools, served on the Maryland Association of School Principals, was a member of the National Education Association, a member of the Maryland Retired School Personnel and Garrett County Retired Teachers Association. He was a JV basketball coach for Southern. After retirement from teaching, Wayne was a Relationship Manager for Garrett National Bank. He served as a Garrett County Commissioner. He was also a member of the Masonic Temple of Oakland, Shrine Club in Cumberland, Oakland Elks Lodge, American Legion Proctor Kildow Post #71, and the Oakland Mtn. Lake Park Lions Club during which time he received the Melvin Jones Award. Wayne had served on the Board of Directors for Hospice of Garrett County as well as the former Garrett Memorial Hospital Board of Governors for which he served as President for many years, was director of VIVA Hospital Office Volunteers and was on the Board of Directors for the Maryland Hospital Association. Wayne also served as Director of GLAF. In later years, Wayne served as a volunteer for the Historical Society Museum and the Train Station in Oakland. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He enjoyed American history, historical travel, time spent on the golf course and Wayne, even after sixty-five years, would remember his former students' names and enjoyed talking with them.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Shank) Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Rita (McKenzie) Johnson and Jacqueline (McKenzie) Johnson. Being the last surviving of twelve children, he was also preceded in death by five sisters, Oneda Johnson Davis, Eleanor Johnson Stemple, Phyllis Johnson Helbig, Nancy Johnson Glotfelty, and Rita Johnson Trout, and six brothers, Amos Johnson, Carl Johnson, Donald Johnson, Gene Johnson, Gerald Johnson, and John Johnson.

Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, from 4 to 7 PM and at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 318 E Oak St., Oakland on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, from 11 AM to 12 PM. A funeral service will be held in the church at 12 PM with Rev. Dr. Matthew Paugh and Pastor Barbara Rexroad officiating. Interment, with military honors accorded by the combined honor guard of the American Legion Proctor Kildow Post #71 and the Deer Park VFW Post #10077, will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
