Michael Stem

Michael William Stem, 72, of Oakland, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Garrett Regional Medical Center.

Born on November 11, 1950, in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Clarence Stem and Shirley (Stonesifer) Stem.

Michael was a graduate of Southern Garrett High School and received his associate's degree at Garrett College. He served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War era. He then pursued a career as a Correctional Officer at the Garrett County Sheriff's Office, where he subsequently retired. He most recently worked at TDEC in Oakland. Michael was a member of St Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #71 in Oakland. Michael was a firearm enthusiast and collector, and he enjoyed hunting, reloading, and sports shooting. He also enjoyed music and reading, particularly sci-fi and fantasy books.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Susan (Griffith) Stem; children, Elizabeth Ward and husband Michael and Nathaniel Stem of Oakland; grandchildren, Gabrielle Stem, Kelsey Ward, Joycelyn Ward, Michael Ward Jr., Tiana Ward, Nadia Ward, and Monique Ward; siblings, Greg Stem of Hanover, PA, Karl Stem of Gormania, WV, Kenneth Stem of Martinsburg, WV, Thomas Stem of Oakland, Scott Stem of Palo Alto, CA, John Stem of Berryville, VA, Martha Hayhurst of Oakland, Cynthia Stem of Mt. Storm, WV, Cheryl Yommer of Mtn. Lake Park, Kathy Mattingly of Oakland, Sheila Hetrick of Martinsburg, WV, and Debora Showe of Hagerstown, MD; along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Stem, and siblings, Jeffrey Stem and Vicky Hamrick.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 3 PM in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Oakland with full military honors by the combine honor guard of Proctor Kildow American Legion POST 71 and the Deer Park VFW POST 10077.
