Kathleen Marie Alvarez, 95 of Oakland died on Saturday, September 7, 2019, at her home. She was born in Erie, PA on January 1, 1924, to the late Harvey and Mary (MacLean) MacIvor. She moved to Pittsburgh, PA at the age of two and grew up and was educated there. She began a career in nursing at Mercy Hospital where she met her future husband, Dr. Joseph Alvarez. They were married in Boston in November 1945 as he was being deployed as a military surgeon at the end of World War II. After completion of his training, they eventually settled in Oakland, Maryland. She was a wonderful mother to her 6 children. Nonny was an adored grandmother to 9 grandchildren and then great grandmother to 9 great grandchildren. She was the center of all family activities. She was a wonderful cook herself and even provided a place for cooking classes at her beloved shop, the Small Pedlar. She created a love for reading in all of her family and friends. As she grew older, she kept track of everyone in the family by email. This allowed her to continue to provide advice and laughs, even from far away. In addition to her parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Markgraf. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Joseph Alvarez Sr.; her children, Mary Kathleen Sadighi (Dr. Parvis Sadighi), Joseph Alvarez Jr., John Harvey Alvarez Sr. (Julie Alvarez), Dr. Dona Alvarez (Dr. Marjorie Fridkin), Jean Alvarez, and Jaime Alvarez (Vicki Carlson); grandchildren, Sheila Sadighi, Joseph Sadighi (Annalisa Bracco-Sadighi), Katie Alvarez Gibson (Beau Gibson), Matthew Alvarez (Cody Alvarez), Emily Alvarez, Nancy Alvarez Green (Brady Green), Carolyn Alvarez, John Harvey Alvarez Jr. (Katie Zanger Alvarez), and Jaime Alvarez; and great grandchildren, Leyla Sadighi, Celeste and Davide Sadighi, Keller and Ryan Green, Angus and Amelia Alvarez, Clark and MacLean Gibson, and Graham Alvarez. Katie had many kind close friends she loved and enjoyed through the years here in Garrett County. Funeral services are private.
