James Croston

Oakland

James Oliver Croston, of Oakland, went home to be with the Lord together with his wife, Betty Lee Croston. Born on September 20, 1932, in Hoffman, MD, he was the son of the late Marshall A. and Nellie M. (Layman) Croston. Jim was a graduate of Beall High School Class of 1950 and attended Frostburg State College. He proudly served in the United States Army as a tanker in the 2ndArmored Division from February 1953 to February 1955 while stationed in Germany. Jim was employed by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries, Works #7 in Cumberland where he was a line worker, over the road truck driver and a staff supervisor. He retired from PPG Industries, Works #14, Mt. Zion, Illinois and relocated back to Maryland. Jim was married for 63 years to the love of his life, Betty Lee (Lewis) Croston. They were married in Annapolis, MD on July 25, 1956. Jim was a vital volunteer at the Garrett Regional Medical Center as part of the Volunteers in Various Area’s Program as a mail processer and registration desk team member. He was a member of the Loar Auxiliary and held the position of treasurer, assistant treasurer, food manager and was dedicated to the success of the gift shop. Jim was a former member of Frostburg United Methodist Church and a current member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he served in various capacities on many committees and was co-chair of Trustee’s and served on the UMC District Committee.

Jim is survived by a daughter, Denise L. Shay and husband James of Mtn. Lake Park; a son, James O. Croston, Jr. and wife Susan of Sand Springs, OK; grandchildren, John E. Brodbeck, Jr. of Mtn. Lake Park, Stephanie N. Slaubaugh and husband Mick of Eglon, WV, James R. Shay, II and wife Michelle of Elk Garden, WV, Kaitlyn J. Croston and Connor J. Croston, both of Tulsa OK; great grandchildren, Britani Seabold of Cumberland, Zachary Shay and Wyatt Shay, both of Oakland; siblings, Thelma Yates of Claysville, MD, Doris Bendle of Loartown, MD, Paul Croston and wife Sharon of Stephens City, VA and Gary Croston and wife Linda; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Bender and Betty Croston.

Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland on Friday, March 1, 2019, from 3 to 7 PM and on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 318 E. Oak St., Oakland from 9 to 10 AM after which time a service will be held with the Rev. Matthew Paugh officiating. Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
