Douglas Wade DeBerry, 87, of Oakland, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at his home surrounded by family. Born on July 8, 1937, in Deer Park, he was the son of the late Corwin and Mary (Sebold) DeBerry.
Douglas served his country in the U.S. Army. After his time in the service, he joined the Operating Engineers Local 37 as a heavy equipment mechanic. He was a talented mechanic who "could fix anything", according to anyone familiar with his work. After retirement, he could be found tinkering in his shed, working in the garden, or hunting/fishing with his grandkids. Although he was retired, he continued his love of mechanic work for family and friends on the side. He was always willing to help out anyone. He enjoyed traveling out west with his hunting buddies, and hanging out with the guys at deer camp. He enjoyed rebuilding old airplanes with his friend. He was a great historian and had many stories of Deer Park, Mountain Lake Park, and Oakland from the good old days. Douglas was a member of the American Legion Post 71.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beverly (Wrightsman) DeBerry; two sons, Donnie DeBerry and the late Eileen DeBerry of Oakland and Corbin DeBerry of Sevierville, TN; two daughters, Jenny Michael and husband Jamie of Oakland and Andrea Crouse and husband Bob of Oakland; grandsons, Jeff Michaels and wife Britt, Dalton DeBerry, Kolton Michael and Ryan Ravenscroft; granddaughters Kristen Menges and husband Aaron, Erin Layton, Emma Michael, and Katelynn Crouse; nine great grandchildren; and his brother, Ralph "Gene" DeBerry and companion Janet.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Ann DeWitt and his brother, Everett DeBerry.
Per Douglas' request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271 Oakland, MD 21550.
The Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A., - Oakland Chapel is honored to be serving the DeBerry family.
