Clarence Leo Stem, 96, of Mtn. Lake Park, MD, died on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Stonerise of Kingwood, WV.
Born on December 8, 1925, in Westminster, MD, he was the son of the late Clarence Francis and Sara Stem.
Clarence was a graduate of St. John's School and a proud veteran of the Army Air Corp where he was a flight engineer and navigator on B29's. He worked for the former C & P Telephone Company for forty-two years. Clarence was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Oakland, was a member of the Rotary Club and the American Legion Post #71 in Oakland. In addition to spending time with his family, he enjoyed bowling, wood-working, and was an avid Steelers and Orioles fan. He was lovingly known as Pappy Stem.
He is survived by thirteen children, Greg Stem of Hanover, PA, Michael Stem of Oakland, Karl Stem of Gormania, WV, Kenneth Stem of Martinsburg, WV, Thomas Stem of Oakland, Scott Stem of Palo Alto, CA, John Stem of Berryville, VA, Martha Hayhurst of Oakland, Cynthia Stem of Mt. Storm, WV, Cheryl Yommer of Mtn. Lake Park, Kathy Mattingly of Oakland, Sheila Hetrick of Martinsburg, WV, and Debora Hamrick of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jonathan, Beth, Eric, Tina, Aaron, Sarah, Tom, Jeremy, Rhonda, Cora, Jesse, John, Jennifer, Phillip, Gaven, Lisa, Kayla, Jayson, Megan, Alyssa, Nichole, Noah, Sammy, Jeffrey, Mariah, Sean, David, Bella and Joseph; thirty-four great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Shirley F (Stonesifer) Stem; two children, Jeffrey Stem and Vicky Hamrick; a granddaughter, Shekinah; and two brothers, Lester and Edger Stem.
Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Thursday, February 3, 2022, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 4, 2022, in St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 208 S 4th St, Oakland, at 11 AM with Fr. Tom Gills as celebrant. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Oakland.
