Paul Walter Weiler

December 15, 1936 ~ December 20, 2019 (age 83)

Obituary

On December 20, 2019, Paul Walter Weiler, a mathematician and community leader, passed away suddenly at the age of 83. His beloved wife, Pat, predeceased Paul on October 30, 2019. Born in Frankfurt, Germany to Elizabeth and Julius Weiler, Paul and his family fled Nazi Germany to the United States in 1938. After growing up in New York City, Paul studied at Queens College, City University of New York.

Paul met Pat, his bride of 57 years while driving to a Pennsylvania ski resort. Shortly after that, Paul went to work at Thule Air Base in Greenland. After many letters debating religious philosophy, Paul and Pat married in 1962. They moved to Houston, TX, when Paul was hired by IBM to help develop the operating system for the guidance computer used to put the first man on the moon in the Apollo 11 mission. Throughout Paul's life, he recounted the excitement, uncertainty, and challenge of putting a man on the moon. While in Houston, Paul and Pat welcomed the birth of their daughter, Judith Ann, and son, David Joseph. After six years, Paul moved to Potomac, Maryland, where they made their home for more than 45 years. After a 26-year career with IBM Federal Systems, Paul was proud to be a Program Manager and Quality Systems auditor at Lockheed Martin until his retirement in 2006

Paul and Pat purchased a home on Deep Creek Lake in 1973. After growing up in New York City, Paul immediately fell in love with Garrett County and looked forward to retiring at the Lake. Paul enjoyed photography and making stained glass.  Upon his retirement, Paul started his second career as an advocate and leader for the betterment of Garrett County. In addition to joining the cycling group, the Chain Gang, and the Deep Creek Lake Yacht Club, Paul served as a Board member of the Friends of Deep Creek Lake, and the Board Treasurer of the Garrett College Foundation and The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival. Paul was passionate about serving on the Board of the Deep Creek Watershed Foundation as its Project Manager. Most recently, Paul was elected President of the Property Owners' Association of Deep Creek. Paul was also the editor of the Deep Creek Dispatch. His deep involvement in the community was a tremendous source of satisfaction and pride for him and his family.

Paul was eternally grateful for the many friends who supported him as he cared for Pat after her diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease four years ago. He could not have cared for her so beautifully without the love and compassion of the Garrett County community.

Paul is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Judith and Sean Casey of Olney, Maryland, his son and daughter-in-law, David Weiler, and Leslie Bellas of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and four grandchildren, Alexander and Katharine Weiler and Nicholas and Elizabeth Casey.

Judith and David would like to invite those who knew Paul to a celebration of his life (or as Paul would say “Drink Hour”) on Saturday, January 11, 2019 from 4-6 PM at Ace’s Run. The family appreciates donations to the Deep Creek Watershed Foundation in place of flowers.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland.
